Institutional Best Practices

Best Practices -I

Title of the Practice : “Save Nature for Safe Future”

Objectives of the Practice

In today’s world, environmental issues are a growing concern. No education is complete without an awareness of the importance and significance of environment in our daily lives. However rapid modernization poses an alarming threat to environment. Therefore it becomes our moral duty to keep our environment safe and clean for a better tomorrow. As a part of best practice, the college chooses to protect and preserve our natural surroundings and inculcate the moral values among the students to encourage them to actively participate in preserving nature.

The main objectives are as follows:

  •  To nurture environmental awareness among the students.
  • To explore and detect the possible causes of environmental degradation in the surrounding area.
  • To promote, improve and monitor sustainable and efficient methods to maintain the green campus.
  • To adopt initiatives and organise environmental awareness programmes to spread the message.
  • To make our college campus a plastic free zone and adopt waste management processes.

The Context:

Tehatta Sadananda Mahavidyalaya is situated among green fields in the remote village of Tehatta in Kalna Block-2 division. Although unlike urban areas, Tehatta is not exposed to industrial wastes yet a lack of awareness among the local villagers is seen when it comes to disposal of wastes. Moreover, being a rural area, Tehatta does not have a proper drainage system. Solid waste and plastic disposal are also not properly done by the surrounding people. Hence the practice becomes relevant in the given context because it becomes essential to sensitize and involve the students and local people on environmental awareness and its protection.

The Practice

Our best practice is executed in two different ways –

Activities to ensure protection of environment

  • Seminars and workshops conducted on specific days like World Environmental day, Earth Day etc.
  • To involve students, teachers, and staff members of the college in Tree Plantation programme.
  • Field trips conducted by the geography department.
  • Various community activities undertaken by NSS.

To hold regular awareness programmes and campaigns to alert people about threats to environment

  • Participating in the environmental fair organised by the Govt of West Bengal and spreading awareness about the conservation of environment through exhibitions.
  • Lectures and talks on important issues like Water Preservation, De- Plasticization, Nature Preservation.

Evidence of Success

  • Seminar and Workshops on Environment conducted: 3
  • Tree plantation Programme conducted: 3
  • Community Activities By NSS: 25
  • Water and Nature Preservation Programme conducted: 4
  • Field Trips: 6
  • Environmental Fair Exhibition: 1

Problems Encountered and Resources Required

  • Problems Encountered:  While implementing and executing the programmes, the most difficult problem faced was to urge people to come and participate in the awareness programmes. It was difficult to make them understand the importance of maintaining a hygienic environment which significantly contributes towards the preservation of healthy nature.
  • Resources Required: Lack of interest among the rural people can only be mitigated by spreading literacy and education among them and by making them more aware through community workshops and public campaigns.

True education does not comprise only of bookish knowledge and classroom teaching. For a holistic development and an overall understanding of life, inculcating moral values and implementing them in our daily practical lives becomes essential. Keeping this aspect in mind, the college has chosen to ingrain moral principles and promote value-based education among the students as a best practice. It envisages the growth of socially conscious students, staff and other stakeholders, the development of the institution along with improving the essence of life of the people in the society through various activities likepersonal health and hygiene, literacy programme, promoting entrepreneurship, gender equality programmeetc. Being a rural and economically backward area, such a practice becomes relevant not only to spread awareness but also to make the rural people feel more confident and self-reliant about themselves. It also makes them aware of their constitutional rights as Indian citizens.

Problem Encountered and Resources Required

  •  Problem Encountered : Since most of the students of the college come from economically backward sections of the society and are often the first generation learners, it still remains a challenge to ensure 100% awareness among them. Also, the lack of proper infrastructure of the college sometimes poses a problem in the smooth conduction of the various awareness programmes and competitions.
  • Resources Required: The infrastructure of the college needs to be upgraded and more time is required to convince and spread the necessary awareness among the students.
